After Reuben finally blows his RB25, we look closer at his C33 Laurel, and he shares his future plans for the car. Oh yeah, we’ve also launched the shop.
Sadly, we won’t have Josh’s E30 around anymore. I did love the look of this car. At first, the square front end wasn’t doing it for me, but I trusted his judgement, and the final product was incredible. It was inevitable, hanging around with a collection of Japanese car enthusiasts, the parts and style choices would rub off on him sooner or later.
People can take so many different parts and routes in Japanese car culture; it’s a never-ending sea of inspiration. Josh decided to take a more Japanese-inspired route with this build. Steering away from the usual Irish look for these cars, he sources some Equip 40s and work Meisters. The idea was to build an E30 you would come across in an old Battle Magazine or Drift Tengoku. An E30 style like an AE86 or something from that era, Bride seats, a cage, Nardi wheel, Greddy gauges, stripped rear end, and Japanese wheels. I loved this thing, but Josh had enough of it, eventually selling it to fund an S15. He had finally crossed over to the dark side. Im glad he built this car. It shows how good these cars can look on smaller Japanese wheels with a drift-inspired look. Anyway, ‘s ill let these photos do the rest of the talking. Enjoy
We head to the annual AE86 festival to check out Ireland’s finest examples of Corollas, Levin’s, Truenos and more.
Out in the frosty depths of an Irish winter. Our shed never gets sunlight this time of year, so the front is permanently frozen. This was such a massive milestone for the build; looking back, being able to roll the car out under its weight and just looking at something that sat as a shell for so long reminded me the misery was worth the wait. What I find hilarious is the trusty Prius in the background, a car I expected very little out of but it’s literally my lifeline to work, 1300k a week, and it just keeps chugging, yet it received very little love. Here is a Trueno, a car I obsess over, which gives me nothing but grief and misery, yet I keep plugging along. Im pretty sure most of you can relate to your daily driver and the more enormous money pits we “love”.
We visit a couple of die-hard AE86 brothers to check out their projects, drive a 3.5 gearbox 86 and talk about rusty Corollas.
Following our special on this D1 AE86 Resurrection, we take a closer look at this legendary build, with a bonus history of Ryota Yuasa’s Levin throughout the years. Happy New year, everyone!
I bolt doors and wings onto the Trueno and take it for a drive. I also ramble and bring people up to speed on what is happening with the AE86.
New flared wings for the AE86 and a starting issue resolved. We also get a visitor to try out some potential looks for my Trueno.
This day was something Gerry had spoken about for years. Over fires in his backyard in Canada, drinking a couple of beers, we would chat about bringing home a Canadian AE86 just because they didn’t exist in Ireland. This country is obsessed with the chassis. Bringing home a bone stock SR5 would instantly make it one of the rarest examples in Ireland, it would stand out for being stock and different. It was always a pipe dream, something we would throw back and forth, but I never thought Gerry would bother. I figured it would have been too much hassle to make it happen.
I’ve been slacking lately, updating this side of Juicebox with articles. Years ago, it used the website, everything was about getting an excellent piece up with photos, and I enjoyed that pace. Lately, I feel like im playing catchup on youtube and Instagram trying to keep the algorithms happy. It’s weird being so far behind with the videos, too. I have to make sure im releasing the content that matches the episodes’ dates.
Since July, the weather has been good. It was hard to sit inside and find time to make it happen. Hopefully, over the winter months, I can double down on the content, as there are considerable gaps in the backlog due to japan in a van and other bits.
Jimmy Oakes calls down to the shed on his tour of Ireland with Dave from Driftgames and enjoys some rings in Reuben’s slightly broken C33 Laurel.
A great moment. The AE86 finally has two working headlights! We fit brand new Raybrig lights and bulbs and appreciate the two functioning Truneo pop-ups.
